Where to check (official)
The NY State Tax Department runs the official refund lookup. You'll need your Social Security number and the exact refund amount you claimed.
What the status messages mean
- Received / processing — your return is in the system and being processed.
- Under review — selected for additional review; expect a longer wait and watch your mail for notices.
- Approved — refund approved; payment is being scheduled.
- Sent / issued — the refund has been sent. Direct deposits post within days; mailed checks take longer.
- Adjusted — the amount changed (errors corrected, or part applied to a debt). You'll get a notice explaining why.
How long NY refunds take
New York generally processes e-filed returns faster than paper ones, and most straightforward refunds go out within a few weeks of acceptance — but review cases, amended returns, and peak-season volume stretch that out. If roughly 8–12 weeks pass with no movement, contact the Tax Department. [VERIFY] Timelines vary by filing season — see the Tax Department's current estimates.
